Orygen Youth Health
Clinical Services at Orygen Orygen Youth Health provides a comprehensive series of programs to provide assistance to young people with mental health problems. The following outlines some of the programs that are available.
Youth Access Team (YAT) YAT is a 24-hour, seven day a week service that comprises three main functions:
- Triage: is the first contact point for people wishing to refer a young person to the Orygen clinical program, and anyone is welcome to make a referral, including the young person themselves.
- Assessment: This multidisciplinary team sees all those accepted for assessment by Triage and determines whether Orygen is the most appropriate service to treat the young person.
- Crisis Response: This multidisciplinary team completes crisis assessments for young people newly referred to the service and unable to wait for a routine appointment. They also provide crisis response to current clients outside business hours. Community treatment is also offered by this team to current clients who require more intense treatment than can be offered by the Case Manager alone.
Youthscope Youthscope specialises in the treatment of mental health problems other than first episode psychosis. This includes depression, anxiety, eating disorders and personality issues. Episodes of care are brief, usually between four and six months, with a total of 18 months of treatment available.
Personal Assessment and Crisis Evaluation (PACE) PACE works with young people, aged 14-30, from all areas of Melbourne who might be at risk of developing psychosis. By identifying people who are at risk of psychosis and providing them with appropriate treatment, it is hoped that early symptoms will be reduced, while also delaying or perhaps preventing the development of mental health problems.
Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) The Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) is a specialised service for young people who experience psychosis for the first time. EPPIC aims to help people recover from psychosis and reduce the chances of having another psychotic experience in the future. EPPIC also aims to educate young people and their families about psychosis and reduce the disruption to the young person's life. www.eppic.org.au
Hospital care Most young people can be successfully treated while continuing to live at home. Sometimes, however, this is not possible due to the severity of their illness or because of risk issues, and a short stay in hospital may be helpful. The hospital unit is designed to make young people feel as comfortable as possible. The unit is located in 35 Mavis St, Footscray, on the Western Hospital site.
Group programs Group Programs provide a range of clinical services tailored to meet the needs and goals of clients who are either in-patients or outpatients. Group programs are viewed as an integral component of the clinical treatment offered to all clients, and encompass a diverse range of approaches and therapeutic activities. Case Managers can refer clients to Group Programs at any time.
Family programs and participation The clinical program offers: Individual sessions with a Case Manager or Family Support Worker to discuss issues of concern and regular information sessions to help families and friends understand mental illness. We also offer a family support group and a family resource room.
Youth Participation Program This program encompasses a range of initiatives that allow young people to advocate for themselves and their peers. Youth participation makes the service more responsive to young people while providing them with the opportunity to develop real skills in advocacy and decision-making. Participation can also have a profound effect on health and wellbeing, empowering young people to talk about their experiences and work towards change on behalf of themselves and their peers.
In addition to its clinical services, Orygen also incorporates:
- Orygen Research Centre: a comprehensive youth mental health research centre, affiliated with the University of Melbourne and with strong ties to researchers elsewhere in Australia and overseas. Its research, particularly on the early phases of psychotic illness, is recognised internationally.
- Translation and Promotion: education, dissemination and consultation services to allow clinical and research findings to benefit young people throughout Victoria, across Australia and beyond.
